Artist Statement: When Joe was asked to share something special about himself, he replied, “I’m a wanderer.” With a big smile, he shared stories of his travels around the United States on freight trains. The background of his portrait is the side of a Union Pacific boxcar. When Joe saw his painting and learned that it would sell for goods to help people, he proudly exclaimed, “We’re doing something really good, aren’t we! We’re really helping people!”
Editors’ Note: Joe was “purchased” by the editors of the Seattle Journal for Social Justice in exchange for a large collection of toiletries, which the artist then donated to Seattle’s Pioneer Square Clinic for the homeless. The editors proudly donated Joe to the art collection of the Seattle University School of Law.
