Linsen H. Ngai was born in Jiangsi, China, and grew up in San Francisco, California. She received her B.S. from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Chicago. After retiring from scientific research, she became a full-time artist. She currently resides in Great Falls, Virginia where she paints watercolors, batiks, and engages in various other artistic projects.
Her main interest in art is to convey the beauty of nature. The Water Maiden was painted to depict the rural countryside of China where water and electricity are not easily accessible. However, despite the hardships of everyday life and labor, there remains a sense of beauty and tranquility in nature.
