Bridging Academics
Legal Writing Collaborative
ATJI is working in collaboration with the Legal Writing Program at Seattle University School of Law to promote the incorporation of social justice issues into the first year legal curriculum.
ATJI connects interested Legal Writing Professors with various local social justice legal organizations to discuss and discover possible issues/research problems that would make for a successful collaboration. Some social justice legal organizations with which these collaborations include are: Northwest Justice Project, Columbia Legal Services, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, TeamChild, Northwest Women’s Law Center, the ACLU and Disability Rights Washington. ATJI staff will serve as the liaison between the Legal Writing Professor and the social justice organization.
Inspiration for 1Ls
In an effort to help first year law students understand how legal theory applies to legal practice, the “Inspiration for 1Ls” speaker series will feature local attorneys engaged in public interest work who share how they put into practice what is learned in the first year curriculum.
A past speaker series event featured housing attorneys from Northwest Justice Project and the Housing Justice Project. They shared about their advocacy on behalf of low-income tenants and how Contract Law comes into play in various legal issues that arise within landlord-tenant and subsidized housing law.
Seattle Journal for Social Justice
Seattle University School of Law’s Seattle Journal for Social Justice (SJSJ) is a peer-reviewed, student-edited, interdisciplinary journal that publishes writings that reflect theoretical, literary and hands-on approaches toward achieving social justice.
The ATJI staff who have expertise in a variety of social justice areas are available to provide consultation to SJSJ staff members who are writing articles. SJSJ staff seeking consultation should feel free to contact James Tan, ATJI Program Assistant at tanj@seattleu.edu.
ATJI staff also joins SJSJ board members on the Washington Access to Justice Law School Relations Committee with their efforts to ensure that content is relevant to the local equal justice community.
