Legal Writing Collaborative
Legal Writing Collaborative
ATJI works in collaboration with the Legal Writing Program at Seattle University School of Law to incorporate social justice issues into the first year legal curriculum.
ATJI connects interested Legal Writing professors with various local social justice legal organizations to identify possible issues/research problems that would make for a good legal memorandum assignments for first year law students. Attorneys from various social justice organizations present a problem or issue faced by underserved or marginalized communities to a 1L class and the students then research and write a legal memorandum addressing the issues. The Legal Writing professors share the produced memos with the collaborating organizations. Participating social justice legal organizations include:
- Northwest Justice Project
- Columbia Legal Services
- Northwest Immigrant Rights Project
- TeamChild
- Legal Voice
- ACLU OF Washington
- Disability Rights Washington
- National Employment Law Project
- SU Law Clinic: Immigration and Domestic Violence
"It was very interesting to learn about a new area of law and one so important to society as a whole. This really got me fired up about social justice and opened my eyes to some of the injustices so blatantly remaining in our society and even right here in this city.... I would say that writing this memo was one of the most rewarding experiences of my 1L year."
