Biography
Most recently, Professor Batra was an immigration attorney at Gibbs Houston & Pauw in Seattle where she represented detained and non-detained individuals in removal proceedings before the Immigration Court in applications for asylum, cancellation of removal, VAWA relief, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. Before working at Gibbs Houston & Pauw, Professor Batra was an immigration attorney and NAPIL Equal Justice Works Fellow at a legal services organization in New York City where she represented immigrant youth in their applications for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and legal permanent residence. Professor Batra has also done extensive community organizing and anti-trafficking work within the South Asian domestic worker community in New York City. Her community organizing experiences have been recently published in a book entitled, “The New Urban Immigrant Workforce: Innovative Models for Labor Organizing” (2006). Professor Batra has also served as a board member for several immigrant-based community organizations including Sakhi for South Asian Women (NYC), Workers’ Awaaz (NYC), and Chaya (Seattle, WA).
Professor Batra is admitted to practice in New York State (2002) and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (2006).
