Janet K.G. Dickson

Biography

After maintaining a solo practice, Professor Dickson joined the law firm of Betts Austin, PLLC, where she practiced in the areas of estate planning and probate law, handling complicated tax issues, until joining the law school faculty in 2001.

Professor Dickson has presented at Legal Writing Conferences regionally, nationally, and internationally. In the spring of 2007, in addition to helping with the administration of the conference, Professor Dickson gave a presentation on writing concisely and precisely at the Conference on the Pedagogy of Legal Writing for Academics in Nairobi, Kenya. Additionally, with Professor Mary Bowman, she co-presented “Creative Problems, Engaged Students: A Process-Oriented Approach to Designing Legal Writing Problems” at the Legal Writing Institute Biennial Conference in 2006. They also gave a presentation on effective student conferencing at the 2003 Pacific Northwest Legal Writing Conference. Professor Dickson also presented a session on teaching students with ADD at the 2005 Pacific Northwest Legal Writing Conference.

As the faculty advisor to the student organization, Families United Network, Professor Dickson enthusiastically supports students as they address the difficulties inherent in having families while attending law school. Additionally, Professor Dickson will serve on the initial board of directors for APPEAL, an international organization developed to support the teaching of legal writing and the exchange of information among U.S. and African academics.
