When do I activate my SU e-mail account?

Once you have registered, please go to the Engineering Building to Room 306B to get your campus card and activate your SU e-mail account. All students must have a campus card and SU e-mail account.

Is there an Orientation, if so, when?

Orientation is set for Thursday and Friday, August 19 and 20. A full schedule will be coming out shortly from Associate Dean Donna Deming's office. Activities will likely begin around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

How do I get a locker and parking permit?

To get a locker, please stop by the School of Law Business Office located on the 2nd floor of Sullivan Hall during regular business hours. Parking permits, bus passes, ferry passes and train passes are available from the Public Safety Office in the University Services Building (adjacent to the law school). Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

  Pleading under the rules of civil procedure for U.S. District Courts and under state rules. Discovery and other pretrial mechanisms; jurisdiction and venue; summary judgment; parties and the dimensions of a dispute; aspects of trial practice.
• CONTRACTS (3 credits) CONT-100 (Fall) CONT-105 (Spring)
  Enforceable agreements, including requirements for the formation of a contract; problems of interpretation; consideration and its equivalents; damages for breach; the statue of frauds; illegality; rights and liabilities of third parties; delegation of contractual duties.
• CRIMINAL LAW (4 credits) CRIM-100 (Summer or Fall only)
  Substantive criminal law and elements of criminal responsibility. Topics include law of homicide and other crimes; determination of guilt; principles of justification, including the insanity defense.

What do I need to do to find a roommate or a carpool partner?

We will have both forms available at Spring Visit Day on May 19, but we will also e-mail both forms around May 10.

What should I do now that I've paid my deposits?

If you haven't already done so, a final transcript from your degree granting institution needs to be sent in to the Office of Admission. Summer registration materials will be available on Monday, May 17 at Spring Visit Day. If you are not attending Spring Visit Day they will be mailed out the next day.

If I was planning to start in the fall (August) may I switch to the summer (June) start?

Yes, there is still time for you to change your enrollment start status. If you decide to start summer, you will also need to let the Financial Aid Office know by contacting them at (206) 398.4250 or lawfa@seattleu.edu. Please contact us at 1-(800) 471.1767 or lawadmis@seattleu.edu to let us know of your enrollment status change.

Do I need health insurance coverage?

While an enrolled student at the Seattle University School of Law you must have health insurance coverage. Our best advice is to continue the plan under which you are currently covered. If you are not presently covered by a plan, or wish to discontinue the one you have, you are eligible to participate in a Seattle University plan designed especially for law students.

For the fall term, you may continue (if you started summer semester) with or purchase the plan offered through Seattle University or choose a plan available through membership in the American Bar Association's Law Student Division. For information regarding the ABA Law Student Division visit www.StudentInsurance.net. You may call 1-(800) 628.8305 for information regarding the Seattle University plan through ExcelServe (Bellevue, WA). Information about both plans will be sent out with registration materials in mid May.

How do I know what books to buy and when do I buy them?

We try to get book information as soon as possible. We will send out summer registration materials in mid to late May with book information included. Fall registration materials will go out in mid to late July. Continue to look under the Admitted Students section of the Web site for more information.

Does the Seattle University School of Law offer study abroad programs?

No, we do not offer our own study abroad program other than our summer program in Alaska. But, our students are welcome to do study abroad programs through the other 182 ABA accredited law schools.

When can I purchase my laptop and when can I pick it up?

According to the Technology Department, the best time to order your laptop would be mid-May. It usually takes two weeks for the laptop to arrive. Detailed information about the laptop purchase program is available on the Technology Department Web site.

As a Seattle University law student, what do I have access to on the campus?

Once you are an enrolled law student, besides having access to all law school facilities, you have access to the Connelly Center (athletic facility), the main campus library, all dining facilities, book store, chapel, health services, counseling services, and parking.

How does the Career Services Office assist me so that I gain solid employment and experience?

Due to an ABA (American Bar Association) rule, the Career Services Office cannot offer first year students individual appointments until after November 1. Employers are not allowed to individually discuss job possibilities until after December 1. But, first year students are allowed to attend Career Services sponsored events and programs before the regulating dates. The Career Services Office offers students a two-pronged approach to gaining experience and employment. First, they will work with you individually to assess your needs and desires and secondly, provide as many opportunities as possible to bring employers to the law school for your convenience. Summer registration packets will be available on Monday, May 17 at Spring Visit Day. If you can't attend Spring Visit Day, they will be mailed May 18.

Now that I've been admitted, when will I register?

If you are planning to start in June, registration materials will be sent out in mid-May. If you are planning to start in August, registration materials will be sent out in mid-July. In the meantime, please have an official transcript sent to us from you degree granting institution.

How do I arrange a visit to the Law School?

Call or e-mail the Office of Admission at (800) 471.1767, (206) 398.4200 or lawadmis@seattleu.edu. You are welcome to chat with an Admission staff member, sit in on a class and take a tour of the law school building. We would like to have at least a couple of days advance notice before your visit to provide you with the best experience. Monday through Thursday provides the biggest selection as far as choices for class visits. Most classes during the day are fifty minutes long. You are also welcome to make an appointment with the Financial Aid Office if have you specific concerns or questions. Please contact them at (206) 398.4250 or lawfa@seattleu.edu.

When will I be notified of a scholarship decision?

For our purposes, your application serves as a scholarship application. As the Admission Committee reviews files, they evaluate for scholarship. You are notified of a scholarship award at the time of receiving the admittance letter. For more specific information about our scholarships, please review our scholarship information page.

Now that I've been admitted, when can I expect to hear from Financial Aid?

Tuition for the 2004-2005 school year will not be set until the beginning of March. Therefore, an Award Letter will be mailed approximately three weeks after admit date (but no earlier than mid March), if your financial aid file is complete. Contact the Financial Aid Office at lawfa@seattleu.edu with any specific Financial Aid questions.

What are the first year courses?

Civil Prodecure is a three credit course offered in Fall and Spring. Contracts is a three credit course offered in Fall and Spring. Criminal Law is four credits and is offered in the Summer or Fall. Legal Writing I is one credit in the Fall or two credits in the Spring. Property is three credits and is offered in the Fall and Spring. Torts is offered as a two credit course in the Fall, a three credit course in the Spring, or a five credit course in the Summer.
