Course Registration Preferences
Course Registration Preferences
When planning your schedule, check the registration preference of your planned classes. Registration preference can be found in the schedules released by the Office of the Registrar and in the comment section on SUOnline. If no preference is listed, any student who meets the prerequisite requirements can register for the class during their appointment time. If there is a registration preference listed, see below:
Equal Preference
Equal Preference courses are electives taught on a one-time-only, occasional or experimental basis. Because we don't know that these classes will be offered more than once during a student's law school career, we give all students an equal chance to register for these classes. We do this by running Equal Preference Lotteries before registration appointments begin.
If there are open seats remaining in an Equal Preference class after lotteries have been run, any student who meets the prerequisite requirements may register during their appointment time or during open registration.
Full Time Preference
Classes scheduled to end before 6:00 pm may be designated Full Time Preference. Full Time Preference classes are closed to part time students until open registration begins. Part time students can however place themselves on waitlists for the Full Time Preference classes during their appointment times. At the start of the Open Registration period the Office of The Registrar will fill any empty seats in Full Time Preference Classes by registering students, in order, from the waitlist.
Classes are designated Full Time Preference at the discretion of the Registrar. Our goal is to preserve space in day-time sections for students who cannot attend class during the evening. Not all day-time classes are designated Full Time Preference. We consider the overall schedule and how frequently the class is offered when making a preference decision.
Part Time Preference
Classes scheduled to start after 4:00 pm may be designated Part Time Preference. Part Time Preference classes are closed to full time students until open registration begins. Full time students can however place themselves on waitlists for the Part Time Preference classes during their appointment times. At the start of the Open Registration period the Office of The Registrar will fill any empty seats in Part Time Preference Classes by registering students, in order, from the waitlist.

Second Year Required Courses
All students must enroll in Constitutional Law in the fall semester of their 2L year and Legal Writing II in the fall or spring semester of their 2L year. We found that students assigned the latest appointment times had difficulty registering for these classes. We have moved to a lottery-based registration system for Constitutional Law and Legal Writing II.
Please see the Registration Lotteries page for more details on how lotteries are run.
