Outside Scholarships

The Northwest Indian Bar Association (NIBA) is offering scholarships for Native law students in the Pacific Northwest. The purpose of the scholarship is to aid Native law students who are committed to advancing Native communities and people. Application must be postmarked by November 23, 2009.  Applications for the Section's bar stipends for those Natives who will take the Winter 2010 Washington State bar exam are due by January 1, 2010; for those taking the Summer bar exam, applications are due by June 1, 2010. The Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers is offering a $2000 scholarship to a student who exhibits a keen interest and high academic achievement in the area of Family Law.  Factors that will be considered include overall academic performance, course work in the area of family law and related work or volunteer experience. Applicants for the scholarship should submit a letter of interest and resume to Dean Deming by e-mail or by hard copy no later than November 25, 2009.

Latina/o Bar Association offers a $1000-$1500 scholarship. Recipients are expected to attend the awards dinner, to be held January 29, 2010. International Students - American Association of University Women offers a $20,000 International Fellowship for women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Visit http://www.aauw.org/education/fga/fellowships_grants/index.cfm. The deadline is December 1, 2009.

King County WA Women Lawyers announces a $2500 scholarship and one year membership to a 2L or 3L female SU Law School student in good standing.  The scholarship recognizes women who have made a significant contribution to the community or have overcome great obstacles. Scholarship recipients will be honored at the 2009 KCWWL Holiday Party on December 8. See our office for the application. Deadline is December 2, 2009. 

The ABA Section of Business Law is sponsoring its 23rd Annual Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest to encourage and reward law student writings on a business law subject of general and current interest. Awards range from $500-$2500. Winners will be invited and subsidized to attend the Section Spring Meeting, April 16-18, 2009, in Vancouver, BC to receive their award.

Papers will be judged on research and analysis, choice of topic, writing style, originality, and contribution to the literature available on the topic. Papers submitted are normally 20-30 pages long, but should not exceed 100 pages of double-spaced typed text, including footnotes. American Association of University Women is accepting applications for Selected Professions Fellowships that range from $5,000 to $18,000 for women of color with outstanding academic ability. Visit http://www.aauw.org/education/fga/fellowships_grants/index.cfm. The deadline is January 10, 2010.

USA Funds will award $1,500 to full time students from households with annual incomes of $35,000 or less. See http://www.usafunds.org/planning/access_to_education_scholarship/index.htm. Applications accepted starting on December 15, 2009 through the deadline of February 15, 2010.

National Center for Nonsmokers' Rights offers a legal research and writing contest awards for $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 in prizes in addition to $1,000 travel grants and publication of all finalist papers. Entrants will be invited to the World Conference on Nonsmokers' Rights in Washington, DC in June. Enter with only a 1000-word summary of your idea for a legal or law-related action to protect or advance nonsmokers' rights primarily by protecting them from exposure to tobacco smoke pollution. See http://nosmokingcontest.org. Deadline is May 1, 2010 but enter now for travel grants awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.
