Scholarships

Scholarships awarded by Seattle University School of Law do not require a separate application process except for the Scholars for Justice Award, Adolf A. Berle, Jr. Scholarship, the Law Librarianship Scholarship, and the Outlaws Civil Rights Scholarship.

The Adolf A. Berle, Jr. Scholarship

The Adolf A. Berle, Jr. Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who: (1) has a keen intellectual interest in understanding the nature of modern society, and particularly, the nature of the modern corporation, and its intersection with law and society; (2) exhibits a passion for using his or her legal education to the fullest, whether as private lawyer, public servant, teacher, or scholar; and (3) has excelled in life prior to law school. The Berle Scholar receives a grant (without regard to financial need) in the amount of full tuition. The grant is awarded for one year, but is renewed annually based on satisfactory participation in program activities. Alaska Scholarships

Alaska Scholarships are awarded to Alaskan residents who demonstrate exceptional aptitude for the study of law, coupled with a strong history of service and/or commitment to issues relevant to the Alaskan community. The scholarship is renewable, with conditions, for three years of legal study. The annual award amounts range from $5,000 to $6,000.

Dean's Diversity Scholarships

Dean's Diversity Scholarships recognize selected students whose merit and personal success has been achieved despite significant, if not extraordinary, obstacles. The scholarships are a vehicle by which the law school rewards persons possessing characteristics it believes are essential to the makeup of a broadly representative student body. The scholarship is renewable, with conditions, for three years of legal study. Scholarship amounts range from $3,000 to $12,500.

The Community Service Stipend

The Community Service Stipend awards $3,000 to entering students, for their first year only, who have participated in Americorps, City Year, Peace Corps, VISTA, Teach for America or Jesuit Volunteer Corps. No application is required. Please submit a cover letter with proof of participation and completion of the program. This information must be included with your completed application for admission to Seattle University School of Law.

The Law Librarianship Scholarship

The Law Librarianship Scholarship provides annual support for a Seattle University School of Law student who is interested in law librarianship. Eligible candidates include Seattle University School of Law 2Ls and 3 Ls who already have an MLS degree, or who have expressed interest in pursuing an MLS degree after law school graduation...(Application Information)

Native American Law Scholarship

A three-year, full-tuition scholarship will be awarded to an admitted student who is an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. The recipient will demonstrate a commitment to Native issues, academic achievement and promise. Native Americans have one of the smallest bars in the nation, and Seattle University School of Law is committed to increasing the number of Native students who attend law school.

The Outlaws Civil Rights Scholarship

The Outlaws Civil Rights Scholarship provides support for a student actively committed to and engaged in public interest law that benefits the lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (“LGBT”) community. Eligible candidates include Seattle University School of Law 1L’s, 2L’s, and applicants for admission. Presidential Law Scholarships

Presidential Law Scholarships are awarded to selected persons among the top five percent of the applicant pool who demonstrate exceptional aptitude for the study of the law, coupled with a strong history of and/or commitment to public service. The scholarship is renewable, with conditions, for three years of legal study. Annual award amounts range from $9,000 to $15,000.

Scholars for Justice Awards

Scholars for Justice Awards are awarded to two students in each entering class who demonstrate commitment to a career in public interest law. Scholarships are full-tuition and will be given based on a demonstrated commitment to pursuing a career as a public interest lawyer, involvement in significant public service and/or social justice activities prior to coming to law school and academic achievement. Trustee Law Scholarships

Trustee Law Scholarships are awarded to students in the top 25 percent of the applicant pool who possess attributes–by virtue of their age and experience, academic background, career history, community service, socioeconomic status, or special talents–that contribute to a diverse, dynamic student body. The scholarship is renewable, with conditions, for three years of legal study. Award amounts range from $5,000 to $8,500.

Washington State Scholars

Washington State Scholars are in the top one percent of the applicant pool and receive an $20,500 scholarship award based on an exceptional aptitude for the study of law, along with a strong history of service or commitment to issues relevant to the mission of Seattle University School of Law. Candidates must be Washington residents and U.S. citizens or registered noncitizens. The award is guaranteed for three years of legal study.

Year-End Achievement Scholarships

Year-End Achievement Scholarships are awarded to continuing students whose academic standing ranks within the top 25 percent of each class at the end of the first and second years of legal study. Awards are made for a single academic year only. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $11,500.

Note: If a scholarship recipient becomes eligible for a scholarship in an amount larger than his or her initial (or current) award, the larger award shall replace the initial (or current) award amount. All scholarship amounts listed above are subject to change.

Named Scholarships

A growing number of Named Scholarships are available to our students, made possible by gifts to the School of Law from alumni and friends. Eligibility for these awards varies upon the conditions determined by the respective donors or sponsors. Award amounts range from $500 to $10,000.

If you receive an outside scholarship or receive employer or government education tuition benefits, you must notify our office. We are required to include these benefits as part of your financial aid award package. If we are informed after packaging, your award may be adjusted.
