About the Artist
José Ramírez is an artist, author, and teacher and the father of three girls. He received a BFA (1990) and an MFA (1993) from University of California-Berkeley. In 2001, he received the Brody Award/Getty Visual Arts Fellowship. He has taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over sixteen years and is currently teaching third grade at Esperanza Elementary in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles. He has illustrated seven children's books including Quinito Day and Night (2008), Quinito's Neighborhood (2005), Frog and Friends Save Humanity (2005), and Zapata para los Niños (2004).
He has been commissioned by several nonprofit organizations, hospitals, cities, film and television companies, and cultural centers across the country. In addition, he has lectured about and exhibited his work in museums, universities, galleries, and cultural centers in New York, Washington, D.C., California, Texas, Japan, and Mexico.
