Externships 4

Friday, February 15, 2008 (half day)
Saturday, February 16, 2008 (full day)

Hosted by Seattle University School of Law

Externships 4: Externships - A Bridge to Practice is the fourth in a series of national conferences by and for law school externship program faculty, directors, and other administrators. These conferences provide an opportunity for reflective and innovative people in the field nationwide to share research and experiences that further develop the externship pedagogy/andragogy and enhance our ability to provide superior programs in our schools.

This conference builds on the energy created by Externships 3, hosted by GLACE in Los Angeles in 2006, where participants focused on a whole range of program options potentially available under the changing American Bar Association Field Placement Program Standard 305. Both new and experienced teachers and directors left the conference refreshed and excited by the ideas generated. Externships 3, in turn, built on the work of the first two conferences hosted by Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law.

The theme of Externships 4, “Externships - A Bridge to Practice,” challenges faculty and administrators to consider the role of externships in the curriculum in light of the Carnegie Report and the general call for increased skills-based, experiential learning. Presenters will focus on a variety of ways in which externships can better provide a bridge to practice for today’s law students.

As detailed in the following pages, the format will include a series of presentations plus a series of short “speed-sharing” sessions. Presentations will address a broad range of topics designed to interest both new and experienced directors and faculty. Some presentations will be repeated to allow attendees to attend their primary programs of interest. Please see the conference schedule.

The Externships 4 Program Brochure can be downloaded, but please note that any conference changes will be noted on the Web site and not the brochure.
