issues examined in this course; and (3) general readings on
First Amendment speech and press issues.
General First Amendment Websites
An exhaustive list of websites related to First Amendment issues is well beyond the scope of this page. The following are among the most prominent and well maintained sites that concentrate specially on freedoms of expression. These websites are distinguished by the breadth of coverage and the immediacy of attention that they give to important First Amendment developments in politics, law, and culture.
Perhaps the most important First Amendment site on the Internet today is the Freedom Forum's First Amendment Center online library. Its resources categorize the entire body of U.S. Supreme Court free-speech cases, and provide a compendium of important information relating to every case. The online library is not limited to Internet-related cases.
Perkins Coie LLP maintains an impressive Internet Case Digest that provides synopses and opinion/media hyperlinks for the most recent Internet-related cases filed in or decided by American courts. The entries are coded by key terms, including many relevant to the subject matters of this course, and a search function is available to classify entries according to the coded terms.
Among the more extensive databases on the First Amendment that can be found on the Internet, the following are particularly of note:
American Civil Liberties Freedom Network
Center for Democracy & Technology
Electronic Frontier Foundation
Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
General First Amendment Readings
A number of the most important books written on the American freedoms of speech and press are listed on the Extracurricular ("Pleasure" Reading) page maintained for my Federal Constitutional Law class. For a more thorough coverage of diverse First Amendment topics, you might browse the list of these works.
Books-on-Law, a site within Jurist, maintained information on the trade press and university press books published on First Amendment subjects from 1997 to 2001. At your convenience, check out the titles listed under the "Freedom of Expression" category in the Book Notices lists for 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, and1997. Furthermore, Books-on-Law has published reviews of many of these books. To locate these reviews, look at the General Index of Reviews (under Free Speech) for 1999-2000 and 1998-1999, or use the search tool for the site.
Specific First Amendment Websites
This section of the site is constantly under development. Entries will be added as they are discovered. If you locate any site that should be represented here, please recommend its inclusion.
