Laura Murphy

Biography

Laura Murphy's current professional interest is the development of lawyers' leadership skills, particularly in the area of organizational ethics and compliance.

Murphy came to SU from Safeco Corporation where she was Chief Regulatory and Compliance Officer, Vice President and Associate General Counsel, responsible for the legal, regulatory and compliance staffs of the Safeco Insurance Companies. There she created the companies' first centralized, 50-state compliance and regulator relations program, using innovative technology to inform and train employees and monitor developments across the nation. At Safeco, she led teams through several domestic and international acquisitions and divestitures, and also managed significant proceedings and class action litigation challenging company practices in areas as diverse as employment, environment, finance and sales practices.

Prior to joining Safeco, Murphy was a partner and trial lawyer at the Carney Badley Spellman law firm in Seattle. She is a graduate of Georgetown University Law School and Northwestern University. At Georgetown, she was a Law Fellow and taught legal research and writing to law students. She also served as Articles and Notes Editor of the American Criminal Law Review.
