Nicholas Mitchell

Adjunct Professor

Biography

In his role as senior attorney for Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, Professor Mitchell focuses on supporting Wizards' corporate initiatives and strategies for its awarding winning brands: Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Duel Masters and Avalon Hill. He has taught the Intellectual Property Licensing Lab at Seattle University School of Law since 2010, and has also taught at the University of Washington School of Law as an adjunct professor.

Prior to joining Wizards of the Coast, Professor Mitchell was the senior attorney with the Hughes Media Law Group providing legal counsel to clients on a variety of intellectual property issues including strategic business development, gaming, commercial transactions, promotions and marketing. He also served as the Intellectual Property Licensing Manager for Microsoft Game Studios, where he focused on negotiating and drafting copyright, trademark, development, publishing and marketing agreements for such well known franchises as Halo, Gears of War, Forza Motorsport and Project Gotham Racing. Additionally, he oversaw Microsoft Game Studios' music strategy and cross-group music initiatives with Xbox Music (formerly the Zune Music Service).

Before his legal career, he co-owned and operated a music promotion and artist management company in the Seattle area specializing in special events, onsite event management and promotions.

Professor Mitchell is the immediate past Chair of the Northwest Chapter of the Copyright Society of the United States of America, a member of the Washington Lawyers for the Arts, and a frequent public speaker on areas of digital games, media and intellectual property.
