Student Financial Services Work Study

On-Campus Employment

Through either need-based federal work-study or through non work-study (non need-based work), on-campus employment offers students the opportunity to work in one of the many available positions at Seattle University. Entering students have priority for most on-campus jobs and are expected to attend the Job Fair during fall orientation. Hourly wages range from $8.60 to $10.90, depending on the position. View on-campus employment availability.

Students may work up to 20 hours per week when enrolled half-time or more. Once hired, students must complete an I-9 form, W4 and Employment Action Form (available at Student Financial Services) within three days of working.

The Washington State Work-Study Program

The Washington State work-study program is designed to help continuing students who receive financial aid secure off-campus, career-related jobs. This innovative program offers students not only the opportunity to earn money while in school, but also a head start in career preparation. Wages range from $8 to $20 per hour, depending on the type of position secured. This need-based program not only helps students, but legal employers who hire our students are reimbursed a portion of student wages by the State.

State Work Study Information for Continuing Law Students

If you were awarded State Work Study (SWS) for the 2007-08 academic and financial aid year, eligible law students may use the current SWS until the end of May unless you are graduating (then it ends May 16, 2008).

You may only work 19 hours per week while classes are in session during fall and spring terms. You may work up to 40 hours per week during winter and spring breaks and after the entire exam period is over (as noted in the Registrar’s Academic Calendar).

If awarded SWS for 2008-09 you must complete an Employer Referral Agreement (ERA) once you are hired by a SWS approved employer. Even if you are continuing to work for the same employer next year and are awarded SWS again, you must sign another ERA for 2008-09.

Please refer to State Work Study Information for information about SWS.

SWS is a need-based employment program. Based on time sheets submitted to our office, the gross pay you earn is deducted in full from your award amount. Employers are then reimbursed 65% of your gross earnings by the State of WA. Due to our limited allotment and SWS need regulations, the awarding criteria are very strict. You may petition to be awarded SWS or you may petition for a SWS increase. However, additional funding will depend upon funding expenditures to date, potential allotment increases from the State and your remaining eligibility for more SWS aid.

Please note that SWS funding is designed to offer minimal part-time work in a student’s field of study but cannot sustain a comprehensive employment situation.

Law-Related Jobs for Students

Other law-related jobs for students are available through the Center for Professional Development, which each year coordinates on-site interviews for scores of law firms, agencies, and corporations interested in hiring student interns. In addition, a large number of legal employers seek our students and graduates by posting vacancy announcements at the School of Law and conducting interviews in their own offices. Each year the Center for Professional Development posts over 1,000 job announcements.
