New Reference LibrarianStephanie Wilson
On
April 1, 2001, Stephanie Wilson joined the law library staff as
the newest member of the reference team. Stephanie received her
J.D. from the City University of New York Law School at Queens College,
and her M.L.S. from the Pratt Institute, School of Information and
Library Science. Stephanie's most recent position was as a reference
librarian for the New York firm of Willkie Farr and Gallagher. Prior
to pursuing a career in law librarianship, Stephanie served as a
staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society, Juvenile Rights Division
in New York, and for the New York City Human Resources Administration,
Office of Legal Affairs. If you haven't already met Stephanie, feel
free to stop by and say hello. Her office, Rm. 202, is located on
the second floor of the library.

Coming soon: E-Reference
Email reference for students will be coming soon to the Law Library.
This service will allow you to email questions to the library at
any time of day or night. A librarian will usually respond within
one working day. Use this service for help on starting a research
project; locating a particular form; formulating a better Lexis
or Westlaw query; or, finding additional information on a statute,
for example. To take advantage of the service you must have a validated
barcode. Stop by the Circulation desk to do this if you haven't
already done so.

Law School hosts "Bridge the Gap"
On June 27, Sullivan Hall hosted the 6th Annual "Bridge the
Gap" legal research program. The half-day program was the combined
effort of the library staffs at the University of Washington and
Seattle University Schools of Law. Law students and graduates from
all law schools were invited to attend the free seminars. More than
100 summer associates from law firms throughout western Washington
participated. Topics included: Lexis and Westlaw research, legislative
histories, managing a research assignment, Internet research, practice
materials, secondary sources, and cost-effective research. Our law
librarians gave many of the presentations. The final plenary session
on "Making the Most of Your Summer Job" was led by Director
of Career Services, Linda Zahrly (along with her colleague from
the UW and some of our alumni).

Conference attendance
Seattle University Law School librarians and library support staff
enhanced their knowledge and skills through attendance at conferences
and workshops this summer. Opportunities to network with other library
personnel regionally, nationally and internationally provided the
attendees with discussion points addressing current library practices
and technology-related topics.
May's end brought Bob Menanteaux to London, Ontario where he attended
the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Law Libraries
(CALL). Two conferences were held mid-June in San Francisco: the
annual Council On Library Technicians (COLT) was attended by Susan
Kezele and Nancy Minton; while Kara Phillips and Stephanie Wilson
attended the American Library Association (ALA). Acting Library
Director Kristin Cheney and Kelly Kunsch attended the Center for
Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) in Boston at the end
of June, along with Assoc. Dean Steve Burnett, Asst. Dean Rick Bird,
Chris Wilen (Technology), and Loren Wells (Technology). Attending
the July annual meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries
(AALL) in Minneapolis were Steve Burnett, Kristin Cheney, Kelly
Kunsch, Kara Phillips, Brendan Starkey, and Stephanie Wilson.

Staff member's family promotes
Group Health
Greg Soejima, the library's computer lab technician, along with
his family, were chosen from among 1000 applicants to "star"
in a two-year promotional campaign for Group Health Cooperative.
Greg, his wife Lucy, and daughter Chloe, will appear in TV commercials,
on radio ads, on billboards, and on the internet, sharing their
personal experiences with Group Health. Filming took place at Granite
Falls over a two-day period early in August. The TV ads will start
appearing during prime time on August 25. Greg has a beautiful family
and we wish him continued success in "show biz."

THEO to be upgraded
September 25
Mark Your Calendars! On Tuesday, September 25, 2001, there will
be a much needed hardware upgrade to the library's catalog (THEO).
We expect the upgrade to take all day. During this time, we will
be checking out books manually and the catalog will be down. We
apologize in advance for the inconvenience; however, this upgrade
is a necessary prerequisite to a future software upgrade to our
catalog, called Millennium, which will allow enhanced functionality
and features.

Librarian search update
A library committee to hire a new Systems/Technical Services Librarian
has been working hard to fill the position. So far, we have interviewed
two candidates on site and interviewed several others at various
conventions, via telephone, and locally. We hope to hire someone
soon.

Missing
books
The library is missing v. 2 of the Official Revised Code of
Washington (RCW) and v. 14 of the Annotated Revised Code
of Washington (ARCW) from the reference collection on the second
floor. Any help in locating them would be much appreciated so that
we don't have to purchase expensive replacement copies.
