Library General Information

Last updated: May 2008

Carrels
Carrels are available throughout the Library. Exclusive possession of a carrel is not allowed. Materials left in homesteaded carrels will be removed. During exam periods, carrels are for law student use only.

Catalog and Research Portal
The library catalog can be accessed through the Law Library’s online Research Portal. The catalog provides information on the materials contained in the Law Library’s collection, including citations to books, periodical titles, federal government documents, videos, reference books, exams and reserve materials. In addition, the Research Portal provides access to specialized databases for journal articles, links to other libraries, and research help. You can access the Research Portal from home or other remote locations. The URL is www.law.seattleu.edu/library/research.

Copy Machines
Self service copy machines are located in the following locations in the Library:

2nd floor - one in the Reserve area along the north wall and one in the Reference area in the alcove along the south wall.

The copy machine in Reserve accepts change and one-dollar bills as well as campus ID access cards. The machine behind Reference accepts only campus ID access cards or alumni borrowing membership cards. Value can be added to your student ID card or new copy cards purchased at the University Services Building. Cost for photocopies is $0.10 when using change and $0.06 when using your ID card.

Circulation staff can fill paper and fix minor paper jams upon request, but cannot repair the machines. If a machine requires repair, please alert the Circulation staff.

Electronic Databases
Many Library databases are subject to restrictive licensing agreements. Depending on the licensing agreement, databases may only be available by individual passwords, through IP authentication, or through library computers. Some databases are not restricted. Information on licensing agreements is available through the Research Portal.

Fines

For student borrowers, overdue notices are sent to your SU e-mail and mailed to your home. If books are not returned or fines have not been paid by the end of the semester, a hold will be put on student records, including grades.

For alumni borrowers, overdue notices will be mailed to the address provided on the alumni borrowing membership form. If books are not returned or fines are not paid within one month of the overdue notice, the alumni borrowing membership will be suspended until all books are returned and the fines paid.

Food, Drink, Tobacco
Beverages in approved closed containers are allowed in the Library; food that is messy, smelly or noisy is prohibited. Use of tobacco products is prohibited in the Library.

Group Study Rooms
There are several group study rooms in the Library. These rooms are available for law school student use only. Groups have priority over individuals. Sign-up sheets are located at the Circulation Desk. There is a two hour time limit per group per day.

Internet Access
Library patrons may connect to the Internet from any port in the Library or on the wireless network using a laptop computer. E-mail accounts are made available to law students through campus Information Services (IS).

Laptops/Notebooks
Laptop and notebook computers may be used throughout the Library. All carrels and tables in the Library are wired with power as well as data connections for access to the law school network and the Internet. Library aisles and passageways must remain free of any electrical cords that computers may require; extension cords may not be used. Wireless access is also available.

LawReference
LawReference is Seattle University Law Library’s e-mail reference service. With this service, you may e-mail a question and a reference librarian will answer it, generally within one business day. This service provides legal research information, not legal advice. Send your question to LawReference@seattleu.edu, or for more information, please read the FAQs. This service is limited to Seattle University Law students, faculty, staff and alumni only.

Office Supplies and Equipment
There are no typewriters available in the library. Staplers, a three-hole punch, scissors, tape, paper clips, and a heavy-duty stapler are available across from the DDC. Other office supplies are available for purchase from the bookstore.

Phones and Messages
Library telephones are for library business only. Library staff will not accept incoming calls for library patrons. Cell phones should not be used in the Library.

Popular Locations
If you are interested in finding specific research materials, use the library catalog or check out our popular locations page.

Recycling
Please place your recyclable paper products in the recycling bins dispersed throughout the Library.

Services for the Disabled
Library patrons with vision, hearing or mobility impairments may consult a reference librarian about services for their needs.

Theft
Theft can be a problem in any building. Please do not leave personal belongings unattended. The Law Library has lap-top security devices on carrels and study tables.

Word Processing
More than 1,400 ports for laptop computer use are available in carrels and tables throughout the Library. In addition, there is a wireless network. For information about computing or to ask computer-related questions, please check with the Law School Technology Department on the 3rd floor, Room 311, or call the Help Desk at 398-4178.
