FAQ for Law School Staff
Last updated: June 2007
Welcome to Seattle University School of Law! This FAQ is intended to answer
general questions about library services for new law school staff. If we didn’t
cover something or you have a more specific question, please don’t hesitate
to ask for help. A printer
friendly version is also available in PDF format.
How do I checkout materials in the Law Library collection?
Check out materials at the Circulation Desk in the second floor of the library
and show them your Seattle University ID card. The Law
Library catalog is available online. The 3rd and 4th floor treatise collection,
recreational reading collection, and Walkover collection material can be checked
out for 90 days. Reserve collection material can be checked out for 3 days.
How do I borrow books at the Lemieux Library?
Check out materials at the Lemieux Library Circulation Desk and show them your
Seattle University ID card. Be sure to turn in materials on time as fines do
accrue. The Lemieux Library
catalog is available online.
How do I borrow books on Summit?
Summit is the shared library catalog of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium
of colleges and universities in Washington and Oregon. This service provides
access to over 27 million books, DVDs, and videotapes. Summit does not provide
access to magazines, journals, and newsletters. Materials are delivered to campus
from member libraries within 2 - 3 business days. Borrow books with your 7 digit
university identification number preceded by two leading zeros (e.g. 001234567
– your university identification number is available on your pay check).
Loan periods are 21 days (with one renewal) for books and three days (with one
renewal) for videos/CDs. Fines accrue for overdue items so be sure to return
materials on time. The Summit catalog is available at: http://summit.orbiscascade.org.
More information is available at: www.seattleu.edu/lemlib/summit.htm.
How do I borrow books on interlibrary loan (ILL)?
If you can’t find the material in the Law Library collection, at the Lemieux
Library or through Summit, fill out an ILL
request form or pick one up at the Law Library Circulation Desk. For more
information, consult our ILL FAQ. Please
note that recently published books, entire issues of periodicals, reference
books, rare books, videotapes and other non-print material are not generally
available through ILL.
What online databases are available?
The Law Library subscribes to many specialized
databases. Lemieux Library has a list of non-legal
databases. Contact the reference desk for help.
How can I get passwords for, and training on, Westlaw/TWEN & Lexis?

How do I place materials on course reserve?
A variety of materials including books, photocopies of articles, and chapters
of books can be placed on course reserve for required classroom use, subject
to Seattle
University Copyright Policy. Contact Susan Kezele, Circulation Supervisor
(x4227, skezele@seattleu.edu).
How can I get on the routing list for a particular newsletter/subscription?
Contact Jane Grossman, Serials Specialist (x4189, grossman@seattleu.edu)
for routing. In the case of popularly requested titles, a copy of table of contents
may be substituted. Because much of the collection is non-circulating, the routing
of specific titles is at the discretion of the Library.
Where can I make photocopies?
The Law Library does not have an in-house copy center. Faculty secretaries,
administrative assistants and research assistants are responsible for photocopying
material on the photocopy machines located in law school administrative areas.
Materials should be checked out before being removed from the library.
How can I suggest that the library acquire a particular resource for
the collection?
The Library welcomes recommendations for additions to the Library collection
in support of curricular needs, research and scholarship. Purchase requests
should be directed to Kara Phillips, Collection Development/Associate Director
(x4093, phillips@seattleu.edu). Detailed
information on the title, author, publisher, price and edition is greatly appreciated.
Acquisitions and collection development require balancing of financial resources,
curriculum needs and long-term collection viability. Because financial resources
are limited, acquisition decisions must be made with this balancing in mind.
