Directors Training Academy

Corporate board members, senior executives and their counsel can learn from some of the most experienced business and legal minds at the Fourth Annual Corporate Directors Training Academy June 9 at Seattle University School of Law.

Hosted by the law school’s Center on Corporations, Law & Society and the Albers School of Business and Economics, the Directors Training Academy is the premiere full-day training institute in the Pacific Northwest dedicated to providing academic and real world advice about important issues in corporate governance.

This year’s theme is “Tools for Teamwork: The Board’s Role in Developing Best Practices for Itself and the Company,” with three primary topic areas:

  • Building the Board Team, focusing on board duties, board recruitment and board structures;
  • Board Relations with Management, focusing on communication with and information flow between the board and management, executive compensation and performance measurement; and
  • Corporate Leadership In the Age of Shareholder Scrutiny, focusing in part on recent shareholder efforts to hold boards more accountable and the current landscape of SEC enforcement.

Distinguished speakers this year include David Drake, president of Georgeson Shareholder Communications; Craig Cole, president and CEO, Brown & Cole Stores; Stewart Landefeld, partner at Perkins Coie and chair of the Seattle Foundation; John Seethoff, vice president and general counsel, Microsoft; Jack Creighton, former president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser, former chairman of Unocal, and interim chairman and CEO of United Airlines; Dick Cooley, past president and CEO of Wells Fargo and Seafirst Corporation; and Robert Leach of the Enforcement Division of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

They and other instructors will explore the latest issues regarding corporate governance and help companies follow a values-driven agenda. The day mixes full group instruction on current topics, lively discussion among participants and application of the day’s topics in mock “Board Meetings” where attendees work together through a relevant case study.
