Graduation will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 10 a.m. at SAFECO Field, located on First Avenue South and Atlantic Streets. Candidates for the Juris Doctor degree are encouraged to be present. With the ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., graduates must arrive at 9:15 a.m. There will be sufficient seating for all guests and tickets are not required. Participants and guests can park in the SAFECO Field Parking Garage ($5 parking fee) located on Atlantic Avenue, just south of the ballpark. Graduates and their guests will enter SAFECO Field through the Home Plate Gate and will proceed to the Main Concourse (Level 3). There will be a limited area for disabled seating. Because of this limitation, we ask that only one other family member sit in the area with the disabled person. If you require assistance, ball park personnel are available at the Home Plate gate.
Academic dress is required for the Commencement ceremony.
A representative from the regalia company will be at the Law School (Court level) on Monday, March 10, 2008 from 3-6 p.m. to measure for caps and gowns. You may also order your cap and gown on line at www.royaltpapers.com.
Please note that all orders for caps and gowns must be concluded by Friday, April 11.
Your cap and gown will be available for you to pick up on May 1 from 3-6 p.m. If you are unable to pick up your cap and gown during that time, please call the Julie McClure at (206) 398-4302 to make other arrangements. Please remember to pick up your cap and gown!
Academic dress is to be returned immediately following the ceremony. Please plan to have pictures taken prior to the ceremony so that your regalia can be returned with a minimum of confusion. You can address any questions about fees, fitting or pickup of the academic regalia to Julie McClure at (206) 398-4302.
Announcements can be ordered with the same company as your cap and gown. The order form is enclosed in the cap and gown packet materials or you can go online to www.royaltpapers.com.
The graduation steering committee in cooperation with the Dean’s Office will coordinate the process for the election of the student and faculty member speakers at commencement as well as assist in planning the Baccalaureate service. If you are interested in serving on the Steering Committee, please send an e-mail to dcdeming@seattleu.edu. A Steering Committee meeting is tentatively scheduled at 5 p.m. in the Dean’s Conference Room on a date to be determined.
On Saturday, May 17, graduates are to report at 9:15 a.m. in cap and gown to the Field Concourse (Level 1). You will be directed to the staging area where you will line up for the procession. Ushers will be on duty to direct you to the area. Please arrive promptly at 9:15 a.m. To ensure that the ceremony runs smoothly, the procession and seating arrangements must be clear to all of you. Every graduate will be given a card, ordered numerically as well as alphabetically, which will determine a specific place in the procession. It is essential to keep this card accessible so that we are sure of the processional order. Procession for the ceremony will begin promptly at 10 a.m. IMPORTANT NOTE: Only graduates will be permitted access to the field concourse. Absolutely no guests will be permitted on the field concourse or on the field.
The Graduation Committee will determine the process for selecting professors to be Marshals and Hooders for the ceremony. The Marshals will precede the graduates in the processional, direct the graduates to the proper row for seating, keep the procession line orderly during the hooding ceremony, and lead the recessional. The Hooders will be on the stage to take the hood from each graduate and place it over the graduate’s shoulders.
During the ceremony, when the degree is conferred, Dean Testy will ask the candidates to stand as a group. While each candidate is standing at his or her seat, Fr. Sundborg, the President of Seattle University, will confer the degree. The graduates will then be seated and subsequently rise row by row, as directed by the Marshals. As you walk to the platform you will hand your name card to a Marshal, and then proceed across the stage to the large “X” on the floor where you should stand to be hooded. After your hood is in place, you will step forward to receive a certificate from Fr. Sundborg and Dean Testy. This certificate takes the place of your actual diploma, which will be mailed to you once grades are recorded and all honors have been awarded. Once Fr. Sundborg and Dean Testy have congratulated you, please return immediately to your seat.
Graduating students who have a family member who is a graduate of Seattle University School of Law or University of Puget Sound School of Law may invite that relative to assist in his/her hooding during the ceremony. In keeping with the University tradition, members of the faculty, staff, University Board of Trustees or Board of Regents may also be invited to assist in the hooding of family members. If you meet the above criteria, please contact my assistant, Julie McClure in the Dean’s Offices (206) 398-4302 or mcclurej@seattleu.edu by March 19.
