University honors law student for social justice work
(January 21, 2011) 2L Alex West was named one of Seattle University's UnSUng Heroes for his work with the law school's Social Justice Coalition. He is on the steering committee of the Social Justice Coalition, an officer of OutLaws, and is a student member of the Social Justice Mission Committee for the School of Law. He received a 2010 Public Interest Law Foundation grant to work at the Seattle Community Law Center.
"Alex works selflessly - never seeking praise and always staying true to his principles," said Assistant Professor Dean Spade, who nominated West. "He understands that meaningful change comes from collective rather than individual action and he works closely with others, always ensuring that everyone is heard and that new leaders are developed."
The UnSUng heroes program is sponsored by the university's Leadership Development and the Ignatian Leadership Honor Society. Recipients are undergraduate and graduate students nominated by faculty, staff and students who demonstrate leadership and excellence in one or more of the following areas: academic excellence, community outreach/service, international awareness, student care/support, commitment to diversity, commitment to social justice and leadership development in fellow students.
