Registration Lotteries

Registration Lotteries are run for two types of Fall and Spring semester courses:

Clinic Courses

Beginning with Fall 2011 registration, space in clinic courses will be allotted by lottery. This lottery will be weighted to give favor to students with higher class years and students who have not yet participated in a clinic course. Students who sign-up for the lottery will be divided into the following groups:

  • Group One - 4L students who have not participated in a clinic
  • Group Two - 3L students who have not participated in a clinic
  • Group Three - 2L students who have not participated in a clinic
  • Group Four - 1L students who have not participated in a clinic (spring only)
  • Group Five -4L students who have participated in a clinic
  • Group Six - 3L students who have participated in a clinic
  • Group Seven - 2L students who have participated in a clinic

Students will be ordered first by group number and then by a randomly assigned number. The Registrar will register or waitlist students in that order. The Registrar will, if possible, register a student for their first choice clinic. If they are registered for their first choice, they will not be added to any clinic waitlists. If the student's first choice clinic is full, the Registrar will waitlist them for it and then register them for their second choice clinic. If their second choice is full, the Registrar will waitlist them for their first and second choice and register them for their third choice, etc. No student will be registered for a clinic for which they have not met the prerequisite requirements unless they have received a prerequisite waiver prior to the date of the lottery.

Lotteries generally take place the week before registration appointments. You will receive an email announcing lottery dates, classes and instructions. That email will include a link to a web-based lottery sign up form.

Before the start of the term, students enrolled a clinic will be required to commit to that clinic to remain enrolled. Students will be emailed at least two weeks before the start of term with instructions and deadline for committing. By committing to the clinic, students agree to the following:

  • They will be dropped from all other clinic waitlists.
  • They may not drop the clinic for which they are currently enrolled except in extraordinary circumstances.
  • They will not enroll in an externship during the same term as the clinic.

The Registrar will send an emailed reminder of the commitment requirement at least one week before the commitment deadline. Students may indicate their commitment by replying to that email. Students who fail to commit to their clinic by the deadline will be dropped and their seat offered to the next student on the waitlist.

 Equal Preference Courses

Elective courses that are taught on a one-time-only, occasional, or experimental basis are designated as Equal Preference courses. All upper level students are eligible to sign up for equal preference lotteries and have an equal chance to gain enrollment in equal preference courses.

You may sign up for as many Equal Preference Lotteries as you would like (as long as you meet the course prerequisites restrictions). The Office of the Registrar will register you in every class for which you "win" a seat. If this results in a time conflict or a credit overload you will need to resolve that issue by dropping a class during your registration appointment time.
