Law school honors Judge Richard Jones More than 100 alumni, students and Loren Miller Bar Association members gathered at a reception at the law school to honor Judge Richard Jones' appointment to U.S. District Court, Western District of Washington. Seattle University School of Law joined the Loren Miller Bar Association to host the event. Judge Jones is a long-time LMBA member and two-term president of the association. A graduate of Seattle University, he has been involved with the activities of the law school.
Dean Kellye Testy applauded Judge Jones for serving the legal profession with integrity and dignity and being a great role model. “We are so proud of him and so appreciate his extraordinary public service,” she said. Judge Jones served as deputy prosecuting attorney for King County and as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Washington. He also was a staff attorney for the Port of Seattle and an associate with Bogle & Gates before being appointed a King County Superior Court Judge in 1994. Re-elected three times, Judge Jones has presided over several high-profile cases, including sentencing the “Green River Killer,” Gary Ridgway. In addition to his judicial duties, Judge Jones has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Seattle University Board of Regents; the KCBA Awards Committee; the KCBA Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee (co-chair); the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission; and the Northwest Minority Job Fair Committee. Amicus Brief newsletter reaches out to alumni The Office of Alumni Relations launched Amicus Brief, an online publication designed to keep alumni connected to the law school. Amicus Brief will ensure alumni are informed of the latest news and events at the law school and celebrate the leadership and accomplishments of our graduates. The first issue featured a profile on alumnus Craig Sims ’97 and provided important information on the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. The Bar Scene is a regular section of the newsletter featuring information on what's happening in the various bars. Amicus Brief also talks about the many ways alumni can be involved in the life of the school. Thank you for forwarding your ideas and feedback on the first issue of the Amicus Brief. We heard from alumni across the country, and as far away as Guam. We are gratified to hear from many alumni that the newsletter is helping you feel closer and more connected to your law school. Please send us your ideas and/or information to lawalumni@seattleu.edu. Watch for the next issue in April. If you missed the previous issues, catch up at www.law.seattleu.edu/alumni/newsletter. Law Alumni Board gains strength The Law Alumni Board (LAB), including leading members of the alumni body who have made a commitment to advance the mission of the law school, serves as an advisory body to the dean of the school and the Office of Alumni Relations. Established to engage alumni in support of Seattle University School of Law’s mission of educating outstanding lawyers who are leaders for a just and humane world, the LAB advises the alumni office on initiatives and activities designed to strengthen relationships in building an inclusive law school community of alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. The 2007 – 2008 Law Alumni Board members are as follows:
The Law Alumni Board, and the Office of Alumni Relations, would like your help in identifying alumni leaders to serve on LAB. The nominations committee looks for alumni who are willing to devote time, imagination and resources to the LAB's goals. These goals include: acting as advisors to the alumni office and the dean; acting as informed advocates for the mission and vision of the School of Law; serving as a liaison between the school and the legal community; taking a leadership role in sponsoring events, fundraising, and supporting the school on public policy issues; recognizing professional achievements of alumni; fostering a sense of responsibility for the law school among its graduates; and serving as mentors to its students and recent graduates. The Law Alumni Board will begin accepting nominations for new members this summer. Please watch for information regarding the nominations process.
