Influential Voices
Professor Steve Bender talks with students after his thought-provoking lecture on immigration, "Bordering on Hate: Compassion for (Mexican) Immigrants as a Condition to Comprehensive Immigration Reform." In his Influential Voices presentation, he talked about how to instill a better image of immigrants in the American imagination and reflected on how the outcome of the election could reshape immigration policies. Lawyer archives available online
Would you like to view photos from the law school’s early days or find a story about a graduate from a past issue of the Lawyer?  The law library spent the past year creating an institutional repository. The inaugural collection is past issues of The Lawyer going back to 1982. Check it out!

CPD initiatives focus on helping grads
The Center for Professional Development has been working on a number of exciting programs to help graduates launch and advance their careers, including Solo Practice Support, which provides training, mentorship, and guidance. A new Succession Planning program helps with buying and selling a practice. The law school and the WSBA are partnering to bring you the tools you need to develop a succession plan and will hold a CLE Jan 25. Contact Shawn Lipton for more information on both.

New Repayment Plan available
A new Department of Education repayment plan might benefit you. Called Pay As You Earn (PAYE), it simplifies the process for discharging federal student loans due to total and permanent disability. PAYE was created to bring the upcoming benefits of the Income Based Repayment (IBR) plan to borrowers earlier. Alumni also can file for Income Based Repayment and make updates online through a new application tool.

December 2012

From Dean Mark Niles

It’s that time of year, when the halls are quiet as students buckle down to study for their exams. But just as we know they are hard at work, so are we, working to provide the best legal education we can. As we look forward to the holidays, I thank the many alumni and friends who have partnered with us this year. Many of you mentor our students, hire our graduates and financially support the law school. For all of this, we are grateful. I wish you a season of joy and look forward to seeing you in the new year.
