Tips for a Smooth Registration

Please Note: After registering, you may adjust your schedule via SU Online through Friday, January 18 (with a full refund and no record on your transcript).

Equal Preference Registration

Review the list of preference courses and instructions at: www.law.seattleu.edu/registrar/preferencecourses.

Select Register/Add Classes in the Registration section of the Students Menu. Choose “08ES Equal Preference” from the term menu, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “submit”. Check the box(es) next to your selected course(s). Classes will appear to be wait listed.

Please Note: Registration access will temporarily close at midnight on November 2, then reopen at 9 a.m. on your scheduled registration date. On November 5, we will register students signed up for Equal Preference (EQ) courses by random lottery and send notification to students' SU e-mail addresses.

New Courses Offered Spring 2008

Clinical Law Courses

All clinic courses are one-semester courses, except the Community Development and Entrepreneurship Clinic (Fall and Winter quarters) and the Predatory Lending Clinic (Full-year). Information about the Ronald A. Peterson Clinic and clinic course descriptions can be found at: www.law.seattleu.edu/clinic.

Externships

Externships refer to law-related placements outside of the law school, where students do legal work for an agency, non-governmental organization, or court and earn academic credit. All externships must be approved by, and are arranged through, the Externship Program Office. Each extern must take the accompanying externship seminar, which will meet one day per week. Please note that criminal law externs must also participate in one jail tour that will be scheduled on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning. The Office of the Registrar will register you upon approval for the appropriate externship credit, including the graded seminar portion. Please see the externship program TWEN site for additional information. Students may not register for externship and clinic credit in the same term and may not register for two externships in the same term. To avoid conflicts of interest, some sites require that students not work for a law firm or for a different governmental agency or non-governmental agency during the term of the externship. Students enrolled in full-time externships will be assigned readings and projects beyond those assigned for part-time externships.

Questions regarding externships should be forwarded to the Externship Assistant, Danielle Armstrong at (206) 398-4128 or by e-mail at armstrod@seattleu.edu. Questions about special eligibility or course guidance should be directed to Susan McClellan, the Director of the Externship Program, at susanmcc@seattleu.edu.

Independent Studies

Forms are available in the Office of the Registrar. An independent study must be arranged prior to the beginning of the term and the completed contract must be received by the Office of the Registrar no later than the first day of the term. Only students in the top 75% of their class are eligible.

Law Review, Seattle Journal for Social Justice, Moot Courts, and Dispute Resolution Competitions

Students eligible to receive credit, contact the Office of the Registrar.

Schedule Planning

Complete as many core courses in your second year as possible. Enroll in the pre/co-requisites for classes you plan to take in the future. For example, if you are interested in Estate Planning, complete Individual Income Tax and Trusts & Estates in your second year, so you will be prepared to take Gift & Estate Tax in your 3rd year (fall), followed by Estate Planning (spring). Focus area tracking forms are useful guides to aid in your planning process. See www.law.seattleu.edu/academics/foci for more information.

Enrollment Requirement

During fall and spring terms, full-time students register for 12-16 credit hours and part-time students register for 8-11 credit hours (except in the semester of graduation). Students receiving financial aid must take a minimum of 6 credits. However, if you take fewer than 8 credits, it will affect satisfactory academic progress and, therefore, will have serious financial aid implications in future terms.

To request an exception for overload or under load policies, contact Associate Dean Donna Claxton Deming at dcdeming@seattleu.edu or (206) 398-4307.
