Video Conferencing

The School of Law has portable video conferencing units which can be setup in conference rooms and classrooms for a full video conference over-IP experience. These are connected to the classroom sound system and projector. The systems are capable of transmitting video and/or computer screen visuals along with audio. We have conducted numerous VTC connections with other countries including: Russia, China, UK, Canada, Alaska, and multiple locations in the US.

However, there are many caveats to using this high-end technology that can make its use someone risky.  

Limitations

Note that Internet traffic is prone to fluctuations in quality based on network activity, so occasional buffering and pixelations is possible. Connections with remote parties should take place during the ten minutes prior to your event starting, as it takes time. Please organize your event accordingly. Also, we do not have the ability to make video conferencing connections using a satelite or ISDN line. Our connections are over the Internet (IP based) only.

Compatibility is another concern. For a successful connection, the remote location must have an open firewall on their network and equipment that supports Video Conferencing in the same fashion we do. Therefore, it is imperative that we receive several weeks notice, along with technical contact information for the remote location, so both parties have an opportunity to setup an end-to-end test.

Getting Started

To start this process, please make arrangements through your faculty administrative assistant, Event Administration or Student Life. They'll need the dates, times, and classroom numbers - as well as the contact information for the remote locations technical staff.
