General Policies
Carrels
Carrels are available throughout the Library. Exclusive possession of a carrel is not allowed. Materials left in homesteaded carrels will be removed. During exam periods, carrels are for law student use only.
Law Library Catalog and Online Resources
The Law Library Catalog provides information on the materials contained in the Law Library’s collection, including citations to books, periodical titles, federal government documents, videos, reference books, exams and reserve materials. In addition, the Law Library provides access to specialized databases for journal articles, links to other libraries, and research help. You can access theses resources from home or other remote locations. These resources can be accessed through the Databases page.
Copy Machines
The library has one self-service copy machine located in the reserve area on the 2nd floor. The copy machine accepts change, one and five dollar bills and campus ID cards that have value added. Value can be added to your student ID card at the VTS (value transfer station) in the University Services Building or on the first floor of the Student Center. Cost for photocopies is $0.10 when using change and $0.055 when using your ID card.
Contact the circulation staff if you encounter any problems with the copy machines. Circulation staff can add paper and fix minor paper jams but cannot repair the machines. Staff will place a service call if required.
Electronic Databases
Many Library databases are subject to restrictive licensing agreements. Depending on the licensing agreement, databases may only be available by individual passwords, through IP authentication, or through library computers. Some databases are not restricted. Information on licensing agreements is available through the Databases page.
Fines
- Treatises: 50 cents per day.
- Reserve Materials: 25 cents per hour for the first four hours; $1.00 per hour thereafter.
- Replacement costs, including processing fees, will be charged for materials not returned to the Library.
For student borrowers, overdue notices are sent to your SU e-mail and mailed to your home. If books are not returned or fines have not been paid by the end of the semester, a hold will be put on student records, including grades.
For alumni borrowers, overdue notices will be mailed to the address provided on the alumni borrowing membership form. If books are not returned or fines are not paid within one month of the overdue notice, the alumni borrowing membership will be suspended until all books are returned and the fines paid.

Beverages in approved closed containers are allowed in the Library; food that is messy, smelly or noisy is prohibited. Use of tobacco products is prohibited in the Library.
Group Study Rooms
There are several group study rooms in the Library. These rooms are available for law school student use only. Groups have priority over individuals. There is a two hour time limit per group per day. Please contact the Circulation Desk at 206.398.4221 for additional information.

All carrels and tables in the Library are wired with power as well as data connections for access to the law school network and the Internet. Library aisles and passageways must remain free of any electrical cords that computers may require; extension cords may not be used. Wireless access is also available. For information about computing or to ask computer-related questions, please check with the Law School Technology Department on the 3rd floor, Room 311, or call the Help Desk at 206.398.4178.
