Credit Abuse & Predatory Lending
Friday, September 5, 2008
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Seattle University School of Law
Sponsored by WSBA Leadership Institute Fellows Community Service Project
CLE Credits: 5.75
Organized and presented as a Community Service Project by the Washington State Bar Association Leadership Institute, this program will examine the problems of predatory lending in various settings: housing, high-interest short-term and “payday” loans, collections, garnishment and credit reports, and college credit and the care program. Housing foreclosures have resulted from predatory home lending and are causing a significant financial burden for Washington State residents. Coupled with the economic downturn these loans have forced many local area citizens out of their homes.
This CLE will review strategies for representing clients who are facing foreclosure on their home, seeking to purchase a new home in this new market and debt relief alternatives to restore their credit. Additional topics will address the legal issues associated with college loans and credit card debt and offer relief strategies. Finally, this CLE will give practitioners the skills to assist clients facing collections and garnishment.
