Working Toward Economic Justice in the Racial Wealth Divide

12:00 p.m.  -  2:00 p.m.
Location: Student Center, Room 160 - LeRoux Room

In these times, do you wonder how the rich are getting richer while most are getting poorer?  "Working toward Economic Justice in the Racial Wealth Divide" is a workshop intended to raise awareness of the historical and contemporary barriers to economic equality and racial justice, using a political education model.

While working in both small and larger groups, this workshop engages people in dialogue around wealth awareness, not just income, as fundamental to ending economic racial inequality.  The workshop will be led by three SU law students, Riddhi Mukhopadhyay (3L), Michael Clyburn (3L), and Jennifer Claypool (2L).

Workshop participants can expect to

  • Gain a better understanding of why it is important to focus on wealth to understand the magnitude of inequality.
  • Engage in open conversations and be exposed to visual representations to help grapple with magnitude of wealth inequality.
  • Gain a deepened understanding of the way in which racialized policies have shaped wealth formation and accumulation in U.S. society.

The Racial Wealth Divide is presented as part of Access to Justice Institute's Social Justice Mondays with the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
