Biography

Yvonne Zylan is a sociologist and attorney whose scholarship focuses on the mutually constitutive relationship between law and social life. She received her MA in East Asian Studies from Yale University, her PhD. in Sociology from New York University, and her J.D. from the University of San Diego. Following graduation from law school, Dr. Zylan joined the San Diego office of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP as an associate working on complex commercial litigation and employment matters. She has taught at the University of Arizona, Hamilton College, the University of New Mexico, Thomson Rivers University Faculty of Law, and the University of British Columbia Allard School of Law. Dr. Zylan is the author of States of Passion: Law, Identity, and the Social Construction of Desire, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2011, as well as numerous articles published in peer-reviewed social science journals and law reviews. Immediately prior to joining the Seattle University School of Law in July 2023, she served as Senior Law Clerk to the Honorable Briana H. Zamora, Associate Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court.
