Registration Lotteries for clinic and Legal Writing II seats take place the week before online registration appointments. Students eligible to participate will receive an emailed invitation to complete a lottery survey. Using that survey, students submit their ranked choices to the Office of the Registrar.

Occasionally, the Office of the Registrar runs a single-course lottery when a clinic or other small high-demand course is added to the schedule after online registration has begun. In these cases, all students eligible to participate in the course are emailed with an invitation to participate.

Legal Writing II: Written and Oral Advocacy Lottery

Before registration for the fall semester, a lottery to assign seats in fall and spring Legal Writing II sections will be held. All rising 2Ls and any rising 3Ls who received permission to defer the course may participate.

Students participating in the Legal Writing II lottery will be assigned a random lottery number and be registered or waitlisted in that order.

Clinic Lottery

Space in clinic courses is allotted by lottery, weighted to favor certain groups of students by dividing them into the following groups:

Not participated in a clinic

  • Group One - 4L students
  • Group Two- 3L students
  • Group Three - 2L students
  • Group Four - 1L students (spring only)

Participated in a clinic

  • Group Five - 4L students
  • Group Six - 3L students
  • Group Seven - 2L students

Procedure

  • Students are registered or waitlisted in the following order: first by group number and then by a randomly assigned number.
  • We try to match students with their first choice. If successful, they are not added to any waitlists.
  • If the first choice is full, students are waitlisted and registered for second choice. This repeats for third choices, fourth choices, etc.
  • You will not be registered for a clinic without complete any prerequisite(s) unless you obtain a waiver.

Timing

  • Lottery takes place the week before registration appointments.
  • You will receive an email announcing lottery dates, classes, instruction, and a link to a web-based lottery sign up form.

Commitment

  • Before the term starts, students enrolled a clinic must commit to that clinic to remain enrolled.
  • Instructions to commit and deadline will be emailed two weeks prior to term start.
  • Reminder of commitment requirement will be emailed at least one week prior to deadline.
  • By committing to the clinic, students agree to the following:
    • They will be dropped from all other clinic waitlists.
    • They may not drop the clinic except in extraordinary circumstances.
    • They will not enroll in an externship during the same term as the clinic.
  • Students who do not commit by the deadline will be dropped and their seat offered to the next waitlisted student.
